ONGOING RESEARCH

Becoming a Young Farmer: Young People’s Pathways into Farming in Four Countries

The research examines young people’s pathways into farming in Canada, China, India and Indonesia. While the dominant and mainstream narratives focus on why young people leave farming, this research asks why in spite of social, economic and physical obstacles, young people are (becoming) farmers. The research is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada’s (SSHRC) Insight program.

Relative Contributions of Adult Daughters and Sons to Elderly Parents’ Care in India

Motivated by the limited attention in scholarly and policy on (married) daughters’ contributions to their parents, and the link between the lack of publicly financed old-age support and skewed sex ratios, the study analyses intergenerational patterns of support for elderly parents in daughter-only families in India. The study focuses on the North-west Indian state of Haryana and the South Indian state of Kerala which offer contrasting socio-cultural contexts especially with regard to women’s status, son preference and daughter deficit. Research team: Sharada Srinivasan (PI); Co-investigators: Arjun S. Bedi, Irudaya Rajan, and Aswini Nanda. The research is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada’s (SSHRC) Insight Development Grant.
